Do I need an account, and what does one let me do?

No, you can browse everything without one. Deals, the Frenzy 50, Stores, Categories and Coupons are all open to everyone, no login required.

A free account adds the interactive bits:

• Follow stores, brands and categories as your interests.
• Vote on deals, a community signal for other shoppers (votes don’t change rankings).
• Enter competitions.

Separately, there’s the Frenzy Pass, a free Apple/Google Wallet pass that unlocks member-only coupons and other perks. You don’t need an account to browse, and you don’t need to pay for anything, both the account and the pass are free.
